About Tap Dance

Tap dance is a form of dance that involves creating rhythmic sounds using the feet. It originated in the United States during the 19th century and has since gained popularity worldwide. Tap dance combines elements of African rhythmic dance, Irish step dance, and other influences.

In tap dance, dancers wear special shoes with metal plates on the heels and toes. By striking the floor with different parts of the shoe, dancers can produce a variety of sounds and rhythms. The metal plates create a distinct tapping sound, hence the name “tap dance.”

Tap dancers use their feet as percussive instruments, focusing on rhythm and timing. They often incorporate syncopated beats, improvisation, and intricate footwork patterns into their performances. Tap dance can be performed solo, in duets, or as part of a larger group, such as a tap dance ensemble or a Broadway-style show.

Over the years, tap dance has evolved and branched out into different styles and techniques. Some notable styles include classical tap, rhythm tap, Broadway tap, and hoofing. Each style has its own unique characteristics and emphasizes different aspects of the dance form.

Tap dance has been popularized by numerous influential performers, such as Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, and Savion Glover. It has been featured in various forms of entertainment, including movies, television shows, and stage productions.

Tap dance continues to be practiced and appreciated by both professional dancers and enthusiasts worldwide. It offers a creative outlet for self-expression, a means of artistic communication, and an enjoyable form of entertainment.
